Very Rare Large Antique Newari Temple Oil Lamp

Height 60 cm (almost 2 feet).  Weight 4.4 kilos (10 pounds)

This is a fabulous and exceptionally large and ornate example of a 19th century Newari Temple oil Lamp in hand cast and tooled brass.  It is almost certainly a unique one-of-a-kind lamp, or perhaps one of a pair, probably commissioned by a wealthy Nawari to decorate and light an important Buddhist or Hindu temple or shrine probably in the Kathmandu Valley.

The lamp weights nearly 10 pounds (4.4 kilos) and has a total height of 60cm (almost 2 feet) comprising two 30cm parts, the lower being the pot where the oil is stored (probably mustard oil), and the upper comprising 6 basins or oil lamps, 4 of which are at the end of long arms that slot into the neck.  The other two lamps are at the top.  The whole of the upper half is attached to the pot by a simple twist screw and is easily removed for filling.

The pot is boldly decorated with various traditional motifs, and it has a long spout that ends in a charming cow’s head.  The upper part, the lamp, consists of a central hollow column that terminates in a circular platform, the centre of which has an opening for a long wick that extends into the oil below.  The platform features a praying seated deity, possibly Ganesh (or a shaman), opposite 3 cobras rise above a small lamp basin.  The 4 detachable arms each terminate in a basin that would hold oil and a wick.  A small handmade bell hangs below each basin.

The condition of this antique lamp is excellent for its age, the only damage being to the tip of one of the arms where it slots into the neck.  This has been repaired with a lead sleeve at some time in the distant past, but it would be possible to remove this and repair the broken tip of the arm if desired.  The lamp has great character, a mature patina, and the look of antiquity.

This fascinating and beautiful ceremonial object is very sculptural and would have a significant decorative presence in a shrine or as a display item in a western home.
