Old Bamboo Lime Container from Timor

A beautifully decorated bamboo container used for storing lime powder, from Timor, Indonesia.  The lime is mixed with betel leaves and areca nuts to produce a mild stimulant, and bamboo containers are an essential part of the betel-chewing kit.  Traditional Timor men usually carve their own storage containers and each is therefore a unique creation. This one has been very finely incised with a classic geometric motif that makes its origin instantly recognizable.   It has a really old and used feel to it, and a lovely golden patina.
