Unusual Antique Singing & Fountain Bowl - Powerful Complex Sound

Availability: In Stock
Price: £0.00

Unusual Antique Tibetan Singing & Fountain Bowl.   C & A Notes (Root & Third Eye Chakras)
Weight 3 lb 5 oz (1.5 kilos).   26.5 x 10 cm (approx. 10 ½ x 4 inches)

This is an unusual and exceptionally beautiful antique Tibetan Singing Bowl that at first glance looks like a low-profile Jambati bowl.  However, it has a much wider and flatter base, and an unusual downward sloping lip with the inside edge being the highest point of the bowl.  There are three decorative incised lines forming a narrow collar around the outer rim, and the inside floor features three large circles where the curvature of the wall meets the floor.  This is a really handsome bowl in excellent condition…clean and stain-free, with extremely attractive hammer marks on the outside and a beautiful golden interior.

This bowl’s good looks are more than matched by its stunning and complex sound.  The fundamental note is a sonorous and pulsating third octave C sharp.  The note is the same whether struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer, but if a wooden ringer is used the rim note changes to a powerful mid octave A.  However, when making the audio clips (below) I found it difficult to faithfully reproduce the low C sharp fundamental that one actually hears when the bowl is struck because of the presence of multiple harmonics, in particular the A4 and a subtle D3.  This bowl will also produce really splashy fountains if played with water inside.

A brocade bowl cushion, a padded mallet, and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.

Listen (2 struck notes and 2 played notes with suede and wooden ringers)
