Antique Lingam Singing Bowl.  Note: G#4 (Throat Chakra)
Weight 1.25 kilos (2 lb 12 oz).   Size 18.5 x 10 cm (7 ¼ x 4 inches)

This rare deep-bodied Lingam Singing Bowl dates from the 18th Century and is in superb ‘as found’ condition – structurally perfect and stain-free but with the dirt and grime acquired over its long life.  It could be cleaned, but I prefer the aged patina, and believe it is part of its story and adds to the look and feel of antiquity.

The fundamental note is a middle G#4 (404Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  It’s a responsive bowl and easy to play.

This antique Lingam is heavy for its size and takes the Thadobati form with its fairly straight high-sided wall and flat bottom. It has a rare folded and sheered rim and a wide grooved triangulated lip.  Decorative circles surround the lingam at its centre, and around its belly, and there is a neat navel or yoni underneath.  Interesting groups of sacred ritual gashes encircle the outer wall at intervals.

This is a particularly fine example of this very rare bowl form!

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.

Listen: (3 struck notes and 1 played note)
