Antique Thadobati Singing Bowl. Notes: B3 & F5 (Crown & Heart Chakras)

Weight: 1.13 kilos (2 lb 8 oz).  Size: 19 x 9.5 cm (7 ½ x 3 ¾ inches)

This ancient singing bowl with its sun motif decorated collar is believed to date from the 18th Century.  It is large for this type of bowl, a Thadobati, but otherwise typical with its gently curved wall, sheered lip and flat bottom.  What distinguishes it is the sun motif (punched dot inside a circle) decoration found on older bowls, and its ability to create vibrant fountains when played around the rim with a suede ringer and a little water inside.  Very few bowls can produce fountains.

It has a beautifully pure third octave B3 (248Hz) fundamental when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a fifth octave F5 (703Hz) with a wooden ringer.

This bowl is in excellent structural condition, with some light copper oxidization and staining, mainly inside.  There are also some inclusions, tiny raised pimples, on its floor.  Inclusions are dust or grits present in the molten metal mixture of copper and tin, and bear witness to the primitive conditions under which the bowl was forged.

An interesting and attractive antique bowl with fountain abilities!

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.

Listen: ( 3 struck notes and 2 played notes, suede ringer then wood).
