Thadobati Singing and Healing Bowls

Antique Thadobati Singing Bowls often served a ritual or healing purpose.  They are among the oldest bowl forms, with some examples dating back to at least the 16th century.  Many show signs of considerable use, with hammered surfaces and engraved markings worn smooth over the years.  Old Thadobati bowls are fairly numerous and therefore relatively inexpensive, so they are often the first bowl a person buys, but their quality varies considerably and good examples are increasingly hard to find.

Their diameters typically range from 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20cm) and their notes cover the entire chromatic scale from the 2nd to 4th octave when struck, sometimes higher when played around the rim.  These popular singing bowls are characterized by fairly straight sides, a sheered lip and flat bottom.  Decoration varies according to age, and some carry magical or ritual markings,  but always include some concentric circles radiating from the centre of the bowl.
