Antique Lingam Singing Bowl.  Notes: F3 & C5 (Heart & Root Chakras)
Weight 1.31 kilos (2 lb 14 oz).   Size 24 x 8.5 cm (9 ½ x 3 ½ inches)

This extremely rare large antique Lingam Singing Bowl is believed to date from the late 18th Century and ranks among my all-time top 5 lingams collected over 35 years.  It has the rarest shallow low profile form and with a diameter of 9 ½ inches is one of the largest of its kind.  It also benefits from an excellent engraved inscription; a fair indication of the high esteem in which this bowl was held by a former keeper.

Lingams serve a ritual and ceremonial purpose and are the rarest of all antique singing bowls.  Condition, age, size, shape, inscription, and sound quality are what makes this bowl so special, and so expensive!

It has been exceptionally well crafted and features a fabulous grooved lip surrounded by multiple incised decorative bands encircling the outer rim.  There is a superb lingam at its centre, surrounded and defined by two sets of concentric circles, and underneath there is a deep centrally placed navel or yoni.

This ancient bowl has two excellent voices, one of which is perfect pitch.  The fundamental note is a third octave F (178Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a high fifth octave perfect pitch C (523Hz) with a wooden ringer.

The structural condition of this rare bowl is exceptional for its age.  There is some light copper oxidization inside which could be removed if desired, and it has the most beautiful aged patina with the look and feel of great antiquity and purpose.

A wonderful museum quality example of this rare ritual/ceremonial singing bowl form, the like of which you won’t see again!

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a padded striker, and several ringers are all included in the price.
