Antique Shaman Lingam Singing Bowl.  Notes C#3 & G#4/5 (Root & Throat Chakras)

Weight 980 grams (2 lb 2 ½ oz).  Size 25 x 6 cm (9 ¾ x 2 ¼ inches)

This rare shallow antique singing bowl with its button lingam was recently sourced in Nagaland in North East India, a region known for its diverse tribal cultures, deep shamanic and tantric traditions, and some of the last headhunters. It is one of several similar bowls acquired during my recent trip to Nepal, and I very much doubt I will find another.

The fundamental note is a perfect pitch third octave C#3 (139Hz) when struck with a padded mallet. The fundamental varies depending upon where the bowl is struck and could be the same as the G#4(408Hz) rim note when played with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a powerful fifth octave G#5 (789/92Hz) if a wooden ringer is employed. The G#4 and the G#5 hatmonic play beautifully together.

This shallow flat-bottomed bowl has been well forged and iis heavy for its size. It has a small-mounded button lingam at its center with a tiny navel underneath. There are two decorative incised bands around the outer wall but it is otherwise plain.  It is in very good structural condition and has a lovely golden bronze interior.

This antique bowl is of a type used by shaman for divination, and on ritual or ceremonial occasions. A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a padded striker, and a ringer are all included in the price.

Listen: (3 struck notes and 2 played notes, suede ringer then wood).
